The Future of the Rec Program in the WSA

WSA – Recreational Soccer Program – 2016/2017                                                                                          February 2016

Many of our WSA Members are already aware that youth soccer will undergo some major changes in the coming months. US Soccer has outlined initiatives which also have an impact on the current age group definitions used to determine where players place in our recreational program.

Previously, age groups were determined based on players born between Aug. 1 and July 31. Moving forward and starting the Fall of 2016, age groups will be determined by the calendar year in which a player was born between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31.

How will these changes impact the recreational program?

At the start of the 2016-2017 Fall soccer our rec program will have to realign with the new age group definitions. Our WSA members can continue to participate in the rec program, but placement is based on their year of birth. To make this transition a little easier for all our members, all our ball mastery programs (winter and spring) are already ran given the new age group definitions.

As an interested player you just have to go through the grid to determine what age group you qualify for, for the 2016-2017 season.

Below a grid which shows clearly where players place come the Fall of 2016.

U9 Rec – Jefferson

Fun of Soccer

Anyone born in either 2011 or 2012 can sign up for the Fun of Soccer program which is a 6-week program that takes place in the Fall. Registration usually opens up in the summer for the upcoming Fall season. This program takes place at the field adjacent to the Jefferson school in Westfield.

U7 and U8 REC

Come the fall players born in 2009 are considered to be U8 players and anyone born in 2010 will be considered to be an U7 player. Our U7 and U8 Rec program runs in the fall. Training and games will take place in the weekend using the field right next to Memorial pool. The registration for this program will also open up in the summer.

* 1 – Please note that all our members born in 2009 and 2010 can participate in the WSA ball mastery program in the Spring of 2016. Registration for our Spring ball mastery program is already open.

*2 – Starting at U8 our WSA members are given the opportunity to take part in either the U8 rec program or the U8 pre travel program. The pre travel program is for those players who in the future want to try out for a team in the travel program. The biggest difference between the 2 programs in the time players need to commit to each 1 of them. Rec takes place in the weekend, where with the pre travel program 2 additional days of training during the week are added as well.

U9 Rec

All of our current members born in 2008 will be considered to be U9 players for the 2016-2017 season. Anyone interested in rec soccer starting the fall of 2016 can sign up for our U9 rec program. Similar to the other rec programs, registration opens up during the summer for the season coming up.

Do I have any other options when my son or daughter is born in 2008?

All of our members born in 2008 can try out for a travel team for the 2016-2017. To be considered for a travel team anyone born in 2008 should sign up for the pre travel program. This is 8-10 week program in which players will be evaluated on an ongoing basis to assess whether or not they are ready to play travel soccer. This is a program which runs in the Spring and the training is ran by professional trainers assigned by the WSA. At the end of this program players could be placed on a travel team for the 2016-2017 season.
